Weave It: Tapestry of Identities
The Exhibition
Our event is divided into two parts: a photographic-based exhibition of costumes representing different Asian countries and sewing workshops.
We will collaborate with artists to exhibit traditional costumes from different Asian countries that they have designed or worn. By exhibiting these photographs or some real costumes, we will show visitors the diversity of cultures and identities of Asian countries and encourage them to realise that those diversity not only in Asian countries but also around the world.
The Workshop
Our workshop then invites participants to bring in pieces of their identities (fabrics or clothes, we will also provide some) or draw them, then collage or sew them together to form a unified artwork. The aim is to create a cosy atmosphere where people sit together, interact with each other and work together to create a piece of artwork. In the process, participants can recognise all the different cultures and identities we all have, respect and acknowledge the uniqueness of each, and mutually 'imagine' an interconnected world where all identities co-exist. We expect this event to result in a unifying artwork that combines all identities and stitches together an artwork that symbolises the unity of various cultures and identities. This will be an artwork made of many fabrics stitched together.
